The Role: VP Engineering ⏳

Mission: Grow and lead a team of high-performing engineers to excel with the potential of a startup changing the way educators engage with their students.

Who: A humble but experienced leader passionate about education. You’re looking to build a legacy on the intersection of pedagogy and technology with a company coming off 10x user growth in 2020.

How: You’ll build and support an engineering team as they work toward the technical vision you own as VP-Engineering. Externally, you’re the face of that vision, responsible for sharing goals and progress with key partners. Internally, you’re also collaborating with other product leads, our CPO and VP-Learning to implement a more efficient cross-functional effort across the company.

Education is a $10 trillion market, but not a single education technology company can claim a world-class product team. Aula wants to change that.

Requirements

The Role: VP Engineering 💻

As VP Engineering, you’re filling the highest technical role at Aula, joining a close-knit team at the forefront of shaping our users’ experience. Reporting to the Chief Product Officer, you’ll lead Aula's whole team of passionate and high-performing engineers, focusing on technical management, people growth, roadmap planning and execution. Here’s a snapshot of what you’ll be doing:

  • Run the full strategy process for engineering (strategy, tactics, goal setting, team composition) and make an impact on company planning by sharing a well-thought technical perspective.
  • Attract a diverse group of top performers and quickly build out the team needed to hit our goals. You’ll serve as hiring manager for all of engineering, including two full-time roles you can fill immediately upon starting.
  • Articulate clear roles and performance expectations within your team—it’s lean relative to the outcomes delivered and has no adequate performers or people in the wrong roles. The top performers on your team stay not just because of Aula, but because of you.
  • Own the outcomes of an engineering team spanning eight countries, confidently requesting resources to hit silly ambitious targets.
  • Ensure the quality and reliability of our SaaS product, including overseeing a robust incident response system.
  • Work closely with your interdisciplinary product leadership team, including product management, support and learning, to ensure that new products and features are successfully launched and achieve their goals for awareness, adoption and revenue.
  • Represent the whole of Aula Product Development, meeting with partner CTOs, CIOs and university leaders on a regular basis.

We’d love to hear from you if… 🔍

You have:

  • Success in building and managing diverse, high-performing engineering teams, comfortably owning hiring, tough conversations and org design.
  • Experience leading project teams using agile development methodologies.
  • A knack for coordinating activities across all software functions including engineering, product management and support.
  • Superior written and verbal communication skills.
  • A commitment to leading through influence and inspiring achievement of seemingly impossible goals.

You:

  • Care deeply about building great products that affect people’s lives.
  • Are excited about joining a fast-paced 30-person startup with all the ups, downs and ownership that entails.
  • Seek out challenging conversations, knowing that it's kind to be candid.
  • Value being part of a diverse and inclusive team.
  • Enjoy working in an agile environment driven by our partners’ needs.
  • Demonstrate emotional intelligence as you communicate with people from different backgrounds with varying levels of tech know-how.
  • Are a team player, someone who enjoys working collaboratively.

What it's like to work at Aula

We've open-sourced our handbook, The Aula Brain, so you can see for yourself.

Here are some pages you might be particularly curious about:

The Process 📞

We start with a talent screen before getting you in touch with our CPO and a member of the team to cover past experience. From there, we would discuss how you’d build a team dedicated to diversity and inclusion—it’s a must-have on our end. You’d receive a project to demonstrate how you collaborate and make technical decisions before a conversation diving further into your management style. After that, we discuss virtues and run reference checks before welcoming you to the team.

All the best,

The Aula Team 🚀
